ROOS, ALBERT. Intracellular PH and buffering power of rat brain. Am. J. Physiol. 22 l(1) : 176-l 8 1. 1971 .-Intracellular pH and bicarbonate concentration and cortical CO2 concentration were derived from the distribution of 5,5-dimethyloxazolidine-2,4dione (DMO) between arterial plasma water and brain water in 106 rats anesthetized with pentobarbital and 24 rats anesthetized with nitrous oxide-oxygen. Arterial CO2 tensions ranged between 8.5 and 183 mm Hg. Regression equations were derived to express the relations between the measured or derived cerebral acid-base parameters, and arterial or cerebral tissue CO2 tension. Excellent agreement was found with DMO measurements on the cat brain previously published from our laboratory. The type of anesthesia had no effect on acid-base relations. Cerebral CO2 content derived from DMO distribution agreed closely over a wide range of CO2 tensions with direct CO2 measurements made by previous workers.

Saliva buffering power in contact with some vitamin syrups available in Iranian pharmaceutical market

Introduction: Since pharmaceutical syrups are widely taken by children in Iran, drop of pH in oral cavity and dental decay resulted from the syrups are of high importance. This research aims to study buffering properties of saliva when in contact with some of vitamin syrups available in pharmaceutical market of Iran. Methods: In the present study, 1 milliliter (ml) of 6 samples of vitamin sy...

Intracellular pH and intracellular buffering power of the cat brain.

ROOS, ALBERT. Intracellular pH and intracellular buffering power of the cat brain. Am. J. Physiol. 2og(6): 1233-1246. 1965.~In 49 cats the intracellular pH (pHi) of the brain was estimated from the distribution of 5,5-dimethyloxazolidine-2 ,4-dione2-Cl4 (DMO) between brain, plasma, and CSF, at arterial pCOz of 14.5-83.2 mm Hg. From six cats cortical biopsies were taken; in the remainder, brain ...

The regulation of intracellular pH in the diabetic myocardium.

In myocardial cells, as in any given cell, steady-state Ž . intracellular pH pH is strictly maintained within a nari Ž row range at relatively alkaline values. Resting pH 7.1– i . 7.2 is determined by the algebraic sum of acid-loading and acid-extruding processes. Whenever acid-loading exceeds acid extrusion, pH falls. The degree to which pH i i changes is inversely related to the intracellular...

Intracellular proton mobility and buffering power in cardiac ventricular myocytes from rat, rabbit, and guinea pig.

Intracellular pH (pHi) is an important modulator of cardiac function. The spatial regulation of pH within the cytoplasm depends, in part, on intracellular H+ (Hi+) mobility. The apparent diffusion coefficient for Hi+, DHapp, was estimated in single ventricular myocytes isolated from the rat, guinea pig, and rabbit. DHapp was derived by best-fitting predictions of a two-dimensional model of H+ d...
